Secret Weapons deliver ‘Something New’

By Paula Araujo

Brooklyn natives, Secret Weapons have been chanting “I Want Something New” since last year when they released their first single, Something New. Last week with the release of their debut self titled EP, they have delivered just that. With suave vocals and groovy beats that kick into high gear upon listening to the EP, one is left with a smile on their face from the good vibes radiating off this record. The record consists of four upbeat tracks that would be the perfect addition to any summer mix.
The first song ‘Power’ starts off softly with a guitar riff and vocals which crescendo into the chorus. This infectious track is dark and mysterious in the verses but truly builds up to a powerful chorus. Despite the dark undertones, it won’t stop you from getting up and dancing along.

The second track ‘Perfect World’ has beats and rhythms reminiscent to an 80’s track but with a modern vibe, which perfectly suits the songs as it seems to take a look back on a recent relationship. With lyrics that draw you into the story of the song such as, “If we were in a perfect world/ I’d make it so you won’t get hurt,” you can’t help but relate to it and sing along with your own ties to the song.

‘konichiwild’ is just as fun as it sounds. It takes you on an adventure with its buoyant sounds, vocals, and lyrics. This tune has all the right vibes to get any party started.

While the last song on the EP, ‘Something New’ is anything but new compared to the rest, it is still the perfect anthem to end the the record on and brings things full circle. It is the track that defines the good vibes of the entire record with all of the right elements tying in together perfectly.

Secret Weapons have truly defined their sound with their debut EP. It is a spirited record that leaves you wanting more and wanting to experience the magic of it live.
